数字电影诞生20世纪80年代，是高科技的产物．随着计算机技术的飞速发展，许多传统电影制作做不到的镜头需要借助电脑完成，或者运用了电脑技术会使影片更完美．于是传统电影引入数字技术。从国际来讲，经过初期阶段的摸索，目前数字电影技术已经很成熟，创作人员已从过去单纯地运用数字特技逐步转化为将其与传统摄制、传统特技融为一体的表现手法。在国内数字电影虽已在六七年前开始尝试但真正起步是在1996年长沙全国电影工作会议以后，在这次会议上“数字电影制作”被隆重地提上日程，确定为我国电影技木今后发展的突破口，在此之后，国家瞄准世界先进的电影数字制作技术，投入了大量资金，引进了先进的技大设备。1999年，国家计委批准了广电总局的“电影数字制作产品示范工程”。
何为数字电影
●从电影制作工艺、制作方式、到发行及传播方式上均全面数字化。可视为完整意义上数字电影。
● 与传统电影相比，数字电影最大的区别是不再以胶片为载体，以拷贝为发行方式，而换之以数字文件形式发行或通过网络、卫星直接传送到影院、家庭等终端用户。数字化播映是由高亮度、高清晰度、高反差的电子放映机依托宽带数字存储、传统技术实现的。
●数字化电影技术进入到了微观世界，它将图像分解为最小的单元——像素，然后再重新组合，以改变或者重建某一部分的影像和情景，创造出一般摄影方法根本达不到的扣人心弦的镜头，在创作上几乎达到随心所欲的境地。
